On March 24th from 8am to 6pm, San Cayetano staff handed out distance learning materials to students near the front of campus using a makeshift drive through. Staff created learning packets for each student and made pens, pencils, and art supplies available to all students and families. Staff also made sure to practice good social distancing! Fantastic job San Cayetano!

All Fillmore Unified School District Schools & Offices CLOSED through Friday, May, 1st 2020

March 18, 2020

Fillmore USD Families

The purpose of this message is to provide Fillmore Unified School District families with an update for March 18, 2020 regarding district actions to address COVID-19.

Today our Board of Trustees directed the closure of all Fillmore Unified schools and offices through Friday, May 1, 2020. All district and school events, meetings, activities, athletic practices, and athletic competitions have been cancelled thru May 1, 2020.

This closure is in support of the recommendations from public health officials to encourage “social distancing” to slow the spread of the virus. It is strongly recommended that individuals stay home during the closure as much as possible, and do not gather in public places.

A decision to reopen schools will be made in close consultation with the State of California, Ventura County Public Health, and the Ventura County Office of Education. We hope to reopen on Monday, May 4, 2020, but that decision will depend on the circumstances at the time. District families will be provided with notice prior to May 4, 2020.

We are aware that this closure has resulted in a loss of time spent learning in the classroom and are working to create educational opportunities for students while schools are closed. It is our intent to provide an update to families during the week of March 23rd regarding the district approach to distance learning.

We understand that school closures have significant impacts on our students and families, and we hope to resume normal operations in the future. Thank you for your understanding during this challenging time.

Respectfully,
Adrian E. Palazuelos, Ph.D.
Superintendent
Fillmore Unified School District

Energy Types

Mr. Criag’s 4/5 Combo is learning about different types of energy, specifically renewable and non-renewable energy. In this experiment, students received a mini solar panel cell, negative and positive connecting cables, a motor, and a propeller. Students had to determine how best to harness the Sun's rays to make the propeller in the most efficient manner. Students worked in teams to make predictions, record their results, and make a diagram of their findings.

Subsequently, this led into a project where students are designing their own ad campaign for a specific renewable energy. In this campaign, students are making poster to persuade others on why we should use this specific type of energy. The project will culminate with a 30 second PSA commercial created by the students.

These experiments and projects go hand-in-hand with our Stemscopes unit on Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy.

Amazing Writers

IMG_3960.jpg

We are very impressed with these two amazing writers Moises Aguilar and Zoe Villasenor. They shared their writing/posters on Abe Lincoln and Harriet Tubman. High fives to Mr. Miech, Mrs. Overton and amazing volunteer teacher Mrs. Lee for instilling a love for reading and writing in these two scholars and as well as the countless other students whom they support! It takes a village and San Cayetano is getting it done!

Scripps Spelling Bee

IMG_3754.jpg

San Cayetano Elementary School held its annual Scripps Spelling Bee on Tuesday February 4th. Each 3rd, 4th and, 5th class held classroom spelling bees and submitted the top two candidates to participate in the School Spelling Bee in front of an audience of their peers.

The National Spelling Bee began in 1925 when nine newspapers joined together to host a spelling bee. Little did they know that 90 years later their literacy effort would reach 11 million students each year. Every year, students from all walks of life have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. They progress from classroom to cafeteria, from auditorium to civic center, just as millions of other students have done before them. The purpose of the spelling bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.

San Cayetano is very proud of all our amazing students. We are pleased to announce that this year’s Champion Speller is 5th grade student Paul Pacheco, with 4th grade student Kaliah Sanchez placing as 2nd runner up. Both of these students will move on to the next spelling event held at California State University, Channel Islands.

San Cayetano Spelling Bee Chair, 5th grade teacher Ms. Kristen Dewy, and Principal Tricia Gradias, send our warmest congratulations and gratitude to all of our spelling bee student participants and their families for a job well done!

The Great Ball Giveaway

Today, the Fillmore Fire Department and Fillmore Sherriff’s Department together with Board Member Scott Beylik stopped by San Cayetano to meet with San Cayetano ASB Student Members for the “great ball giveaway.” Playground balls were donated to our school and to all FUSD elementary schools for our children to enjoy during recesses. Today also happens to be the kick off for San Cayetano’s “Be A Buddy-Kindness Matters Week,” hence the timing of this amazing gesture of Kindness was very fitting. The students and staff of San Cayetano thank our community leaders for serving as great role models of kindness and generosity and on behalf of our San Cayetano staff, students and families, we thank you from the bottom of our heart!
