Fillmore Unified’s Sierra High School Recognized as a 2026 Model Continuation High School

The Fillmore Unified School District is proud to announce Sierra High School has been named a 2026 Model Continuation High School by the California Department of Education. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond recognized 59 schools across California for their outstanding work in providing at-risk youth with exemplary instruction, flexible scheduling, and strong guidance and counseling services that support students on the path to earning their diplomas.

This prestigious recognition highlights Sierra High School’s commitment to creating a student-centered environment where every learner feels supported, valued, and empowered to succeed. Model Continuation High Schools are celebrated for meeting students’ diverse academic, social, and emotional needs while helping prepare them for college, career, and life beyond high school.

In announcing the honor to staff, Superintendent Christine Schieferle praised Sierra High School’s dedication, writing, “Your work and dedication to creating a safe and supportive school culture where students feel valued, seen, and appreciated is truly commendable.” She added that the recognition reflects the staff’s daily commitment to “meeting students where they are and supporting their growth and success.”

The designation is awarded through a collaborative partnership between the California Department of Education and the California Continuation Education Association Plus. Schools selected as Model Continuation High Schools retain the honor for three years and serve as examples of best practices for continuation education programs statewide.

Read Across America

Fillmore Unified School District participated in Read Across America. Read Across America is an annual nationwide reading celebration to promote literacy and encourage children to develop a lifelong love of reading. Organized by the National Education Association, the event brings together schools, libraries, families, and communities to participate in activities such as classroom read-alouds, book drives, author visits, and literacy-themed events. Originally launched in 1998 to coincide with the birthday of Dr. Seuss, the initiative has expanded into a year-round program that celebrates diverse books and authors while encouraging students of all ages to read regularly and explore a wide range of stories and perspectives.

San Cayetano Elementary School Principal Dina Ticas said, "Not only did we have Filmore High School Flashes visit our campus yesterday, but we also had special guests: Trustee Gradias (former principal of San Cayetano) and Sheriff's Deputies Brutz and Horwill. They read to our students and a fun time was had by all."

Mountain Vista Elementary Principal Christine McDaniels said, "Thank you to our amazing guest readers Ventura County Sheriff's Department and The Fillmore Flashes Football Team."

Possible School Walk Out Tomorrow, February 3, 2026

Dear FUSD Staff and Families,
We recently became aware of a student-led effort to have middle and high school students walk-out of school, tomorrow, February 3, 2026, to make their voices heard about immigration policies. Planned events such as these are student-led events and not school-sponsored activities.

We respect our students' First Amendment rights and recognize that advocating for issues they are passionate about can be a valuable learning experience. At the same time, we acknowledge that some students may prefer to remain in class. Our priority is to ensure that all students feel safe and respected, regardless of their choice.

If students choose to participate in a walkout during school hours, the district will respond as follows:

  • Schools and classes will continue as scheduled.

  • Whenever possible, school administrators, particularly in middle and high schools, will work with student leaders to provide a safe and supervised on-campus space for those who choose to participate.

  • We encourage students to remain on campus. Once students leave campus, we cannot assume responsibility for their safety.

  • All students are expected to follow all school rules and expectations while on campus to maintain a safe and orderly environment.

  • If a walkout moves off campus, we will coordinate with local law enforcement agencies to support public safety.

Because these walkouts are not school-sponsored activities, we will follow district policies regarding excused and unexcused absences. We encourage you to have conversations with your child about this event, as you see appropriate.

As always, we remain committed to maintaining safe and welcoming schools for all students and families.

Thank you,
Christine Schieferle, Superintendent
Fillmore Unified School District

An Important Message from Superintendent Schieferle

Dear Staff and Families,

We want to make you aware that a “National Shutdown Day” has been publicized for tomorrow, Friday, January 30, 2026. This action is being organized nationally as a response to ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity across the country.

We recognize that events such as these can raise questions, concerns, and strong emotions, especially for families who may be directly or indirectly impacted. Please know that our schools remain safe, welcoming spaces where all students are valued, supported, and cared for, regardless of background or immigration status.

At this time, we are not aware of any student-led activities planned on our campuses tomorrow, and schools will operate as usual. We strongly encourage students to attend school so they do not miss valuable instructional time and the opportunity to connect with their teachers and peers.

We also want to reassure families that our district has protocols in place in the event of an immigration enforcement attempt at our schools. We are prepared to keep students, staff, and families safe. FUSD does not collect or share information regarding a student’s or family’s immigration status, and we are committed to protecting student privacy. If your family is experiencing worry or uncertainty, our school staff, including counselors and family liaisons are available to listen and provide support.

Thank you for your continued partnership and trust. Together, we remain committed to ensuring our schools are places of learning, stability, and care for every child, every day.

With respect,
Christine Schieferle
Superintendent

Fillmore High Athletic Complex Rises

Fillmore Unified School District Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Denise Berrington said, "Last week at the Fillmore High School Athletic Complex, crews poured the concrete for the gym floor and completed backfilling of the stormwater capture system. Temporary work platforms are being installed to allow crews to safely continue building the concrete block walls and prepare for the next concrete pour. This work helps support the structure as construction moves upward.

With deep underground utility work nearing completion, foundation and concrete slab work for the Lobby, Restrooms, Locker Rooms, Wrestling Rooms, Athletic Training Rooms, and Coaches’ Offices is scheduled to begin next week.

The anticipated construction completion date for the project is February 2027. We look forward to sharing continued progress as this exciting project takes shape!"
