Meeting with the Air Force

Today Sierra students had an opportunity to speak with a representative from the Air Force. Students were engaged and asked great questions. Did you know that the Air Force has its own accredited community college program that accepts cadets basic training and tech training towards an Associate's Degree, getting them halfway to a 2-year degree? Once the cadet is at a permanent duty station, they can finish their courses at the base.

Quarter 1 is officially done!

Quarter 1 is officially done! We are immensely proud of our students. They worked hard. There were 105 awards given today. We were so thankful to have families join us today to witness their student's successes be rewarded. As a school the students earned 1,540 credits in just 37 days of school! We celebrated our students with certificates and prizes. We are so grateful to our donors who helped gather the prizes. To top it off, today was the first day that our students were able to get their lunch from the new food truck!

Visited by Grizzly Youth Academy

We had a highly informative visit from the Grizzly Youth Academy today. The students listened intently to learn more about this program that is provided by the California National Guard in San Luis Obispo. This is a great option for students wanting to gain confidence, maturity, structure, and 70 credits in five and half months. More information about what they offer can be found at their website: https://www.grizzlyyouthacademy.org/

Cellebrate after a busy week!

Sierra students celebrated the end of a very busy week. All students with high passing grades in their classes earned tutorial time to paint rocks and receive baked goodies while the other small group of students worked on getting those grades up and studied before entering finals week next week. During nutrition all students enjoyed watching a round of balloon stomp that our ASB group organized for spirit points.

10 day count down until the quarter ends!

The 10 day count down until the quarter ends! Sierra is a continuation high school so that means students work at an accelerated pace and earn a whole semester in one quarter. Students late work will be accepted until this Friday at 1:30pm. The following week will be finals week. If you are concerned about your child's grades, please check them on Parent Connect and get them to school at 7:30 am for tutoring and assignment support.

Did you know students ages 16 and up can pre-register to vote?

Did you know students ages 16 and up can pre-register to vote? This week was California's High School Voter Education Week. Today we had all students go to the voter registration sight and learn how to register to vote! Some students have more steps to complete. Here is a proud newly pre-registered voter with his reciept.

To register in California you must:

-be a United States citizen

-be a resident of California

-be at least 18 years old or older on Election Day

-not be currently serving a state or federal prison term for the conviction of a felony

-not be currently found to be mentally incompetent to vote by a court

Constitution Day!

Friday, September 16th was a busy day! We celebrated Constitution day with Constitution Bingo and things were competitive! Students wanted to keep playing for 3rd, 4th, 5th...prize. It was rewarding to see students enthusiastically shouting out the answers to the trivia questions. Students learned about the Constitution for 2 weeks through the daily announcements and in Mr. Chavez's law class. They came to lunch prepared with notes and websites to look up as they figured out the clues. We also honored Hispanic Heritage Month with great classic banda music during lunch. Last but definitely not least, we had another great visit with Ventura College and their financial aid representative. We have 60 seniors this quarter and they are all eager to ask questions about financial aid and college life. Our students are getting excited for their futures!
