Second Grade Gallery Walk - Ancestors

2018-10-11-08.44.21.jpg

Families had an opportunity to learn from their children about ancestors. Students shared timelines and chants about ancestors. The highlight in many classroom was the researcher center where items from the past were displayed. Some artifacts included typewriters, early versions of the cell phone, and records (you know those big CDs). Students wrote an interactive piece on their knowledge of ancestors. I would say, "This unit was a blast from the past!"

Eco Hero Visits Mountain Vista

2018-10-10-13.44.43.jpg

An environmental superhero, Eco Hero, took some time out of his busy schedule saving the environment to visit our school. Our students had a great time learning about what they can do at a local level to reduce their use of plastics which have negative effects on the environment. The assemblies were sponsored by the Ventura County's Community for a Clean Watershed.

Ms. Myers Class Physics Lab

IMG_2782.jpg

Exploring the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) concept of forces and interactions, Mrs. Myers’ class conducts an experiment. Students had to hypothesize how far the marble would roll when a student blew on it through a straw. After making their hypothesis, the student tested and collected data. Of course, they had a blast dressing the part. Third grade is on a roll!

Mayor Minjares Visits Mountain Vista Elementary School

IMG_0484.jpg

Third graders at Mountain Vista Elementary School are learning about how our government works. Mayor Minjares visited Mrs. Ramos’s and Mrs. Davis’s classes on Thursday, September 20. The mayor explained what the city council does and his role as mayor. The students asked questions like, “How much do you get paid?” The answer is $300 per month if you are wondering. Mrs. Davis’s class wanted the mayor to autograph their notebooks. The mayor happily signed each child’s notebook and encouraged them to register to vote when they are old enough.

New iPads arrive at Mountain Vista

IMG_0514.jpg

Sixty new iPads were delivered to Mountain Vista Elementary School as part of the districts initiative to get more technology into the hands of students. Each class in grades kindergarten through 2nd attended their first training. Students learned all of the external features of the device, how to take a selfie and send it to their teacher and how to open and close an app. This is the first step in supporting students to use and be responsible users of technology. We want to thank the district technology and curriculum and instruction departments for teaming up to support our students.
