Subject:  Tropical Storm Update

Dear FUSD Families,
We wish to clarify that as of now, all Fillmore Unified Schools will be open tomorrow as normal. While we are experiencing a heavy downpour right now, there are no significant concerns at this time in our county or in the City of Fillmore and Piru that would make it necessary to close schools. Staff is in contact with local and county agencies, and we are monitoring conditions and FUSD facilities. If anything changes, we will notify families through our Parent Square system, but for now, we will be open tomorrow, Monday, August 21. Buses are planning to run routes at regularly scheduled times. Please allow for extra traffic tomorrow morning and drive safely.

Take care,
Christine Schieferle, Superintendent
Fillmore Unified School District

Cuidense,
Christine Schieferle, Superintendente

Binational Summer Program Serves Fillmore Students

Fillmore Unified School District students participated in the first annual Binational Summer Program hosted at Somis School. Two visiting teachers from Mexico taught classes in math, English and computer coding. Lessons incorporated cultural enrichment to help students learn about their heritage and help them better connect to the material being taught.

The summer program provides a comfortable, welcoming environment that helps students build their confidence. Dr. Jesus Vaca, the Superintendent of the Somis Union School District, says migrant kids often need extra support to help them succeed in school. “They’re coming to a completely different country with a new language and a new culture. We need to help them get to where they need to be so they can be contributing members of our society.”

A Parent Engagement Event took place at FUSD on Wednesday, July 26 6:00pm – 7:30pm at Fillmore Middle School’s Staff Lounge. The two teachers from Mexico facilitated the event for migrant families with an art/writing activity and showcased the work students have been doing. Cynthia Frutos, Fillmore Unified School District’s Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services said, "We are honored that our district was selected to send students to the first annual Migrant Binational Summer School program and we look forward to participating in the program on an annual basis."

The Ventura County Office of Education’s Migrant Education Program (MEP) was instrumental in bringing this summer opportunity to Somis. Dr. César Morales, Ventura County Superintendent of Schools, says the MEP has a long track record of helping migrant students overcome the obstacles they face. “Ventura County is home to many migrant students who have gone on to become leaders in our community,” he says. “They have built careers in fields like medicine, business and education thanks in part to the support they received from the migrant program.”

Ventura County is one of only three regions in the state to be participating in the Mexico-United States Binational Migrant Education Program this summer. The Somis program is a joint effort of the California Department of Education, the Mexican Secretariat of Public Education, the Ventura County Office of Education, and the Somis Union School District.

Superintendent Schieferle's 2023-24 School Year Welcome Message [English/Spanish]

Chrissy Schieferle,
Superintendent,
Fillmore Unified School District

Dear FUSD Community,
I am excited to welcome you back to the 2023-2024 school year. I hope your family had the opportunity this summer to spend quality time with loved ones and that you and your children are ready for the upcoming school year. It is going to be a great year!

The beginning of each school year is always time for reflection, preparation, and new beginnings. We will continue to focus on strengthening communication, building relationships, and working together to ensure that we have safe, welcoming, and student-focused schools.

Staff have been working all summer long to prepare for the upcoming school year and will continue to expand academic, enrichment, and social-emotional opportunities for our students, such as:

• New Bilingual College and Career Counselor at Fillmore High School

• New Wellness Centers at Mountain Vista and Piru Elementary Schools

• Adult Education Counselor

• Full-time bilingual community liaisons at all school sites

• Free online academic tutoring 24 hours a day /7 days a week

• Expanded Learning Opportunities during winter, October, and spring breaks

We will also continue to prioritize school safety at all school sites. Each year, all staff receive training on safety procedures and response expectations for a variety of emergencies. Each school conducts regular emergency drills, and we will continue to have school resource officers at Fillmore High School and Fillmore Middle School to build relationships and respond in the event of a school emergency.

Please also consider supporting our School Site Councils, English Learner Advisory Committees, Parent Booster Clubs, and other school/classroom volunteer opportunities. Connecting with these organizations and your child’s teachers, principals, counselors, and support personnel is critical to your child’s success in school. I look forward to seeing our students back on our campuses on Wednesday, August 16. I am confident that, working together, we can make this school year a safe and positive experience for our students.

Proud to be a part of FUSD.
