Dear San Cayetano Families,

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year!

I am thrilled to welcome our students and staff back to school.

Principal Valdovinos’ 2022-23 School Year Welcome Back Message [English/Spanish]

Dear FMS Students and Parents/Guardians:

Welcome back to our FMS learning community for the 2022-2023 school year! We hope you are looking forward to an exciting and safe new school year! Our Faculty, Staff, and Student ASB Leadership class have made plans to make this a wonderful year for you.

We know that this past year was a very difficult one for all of us, but at FMS, we will continue to model resiliency and grit while we emphasize learning at high levels as we provide your child with the academic and social-emotional support they will need in order to earn good grades, maintain excellent attendance and conduct, as they prepare for the transition to high school with a plan towards college or a career. We have very high expectations for all our students and depend on your help to continue to build our positive school culture. Arriving to school and classes on time is essential and this new school year we have slightly changed the schedule to start at 8:00am-2:40am on regular days and at conclude 2:10am on Professional Development (PD) Thursdays. Being on time and prepared to learn every day are the key elements to student success. Remember that if you bring electronics to school is at your own risk. Cell phones must be completely turned off and put away once the school day begins and during instructional time. Passing periods and Lunch are also included—Phones must be “Off and Away.”

Parents, please call the Main Office, rather than your student, if an emergency arises during the school day. Students must have their school ID’s with them at all times, ID pictures will be taken on August 24th during PE class with make-ups happening on September 30. We encourage parents to make doctors’ appointments after school, but if you must take your child out of school for an appointment, please pick him or her up before their PE class or another non-core class. We will not release students to people not listed on the emergency card. Keep your line of communication open with your child’s counselor.

The 6th Grade Orientation is on August 9th at 8:30 am—12pm. Students will participate in a welcome assembly, meet the new administration, and enjoy a school tour, and other activities in the morning from 8:30am-12:00am. Parents of 6th graders will have their grade-level meeting at 6pm.

The 7th Grade Orientation is on August 10th, at 8:30am—12pm. Students will participate in a welcome assembly, meet the new administration, enjoy a school tour (show them the changes), and other activities in the morning from 8:30am-12:00am. Parents of 7th graders will have their grade-level meeting at 6pm.

The 8th Grade Orientation is on August 10th, at 1:00pm—4pm. Students will participate in a welcome assembly, meet the new administration, enjoy a school tour (show them the changes), and other activities in the morning from 1:00pm-4:00pm. Parents of 8th graders will have their grade-level meeting at 6pm.

We will be providing schedules, PE clothes, gathering Emergency Cards, procuring all Tech needs and communicating Library procedures, and taking all students on school tours (ASB and Ms. Van Buren will be using returning ASB kids to help acclimate our 6th graders and re-acculturate our 7th & 8th to their school under new leadership.) At Orientation it is imperative that all students complete their “Bulldog Card” on that day. The following is a list of the items that would help your student have a successful Orientation:

• PE uniforms will be free of charge for the 2022-2023 school year

• Provide evidence of T-Dap Vaccine requirement (7th grade only)

• Bring all technology to ensure it is functioning

• Bring a FILLED OUT emergency card (THIS IS ABSOLUTE PRIORITY)

• Bring the Social Media/Photo Release form

• Remember we are registering online this year

The 2022-2023 school year begins on Wednesday, August 17, 2022. Be on campus by no later than 7:50am so you have plenty of time to be in your classroom ready to learn by 8:00AM. Campus Supervisors, Administration, Office Personnel, and Counselors will be readily available outdoors on the first day with a master list of all student’s schedules. There will be ASB Student Leaders on hand to help you find your rooms as well as serve as resources to you.

Parents: Drop-off and pick-up of students must be done in a calm and timely manner—each of our students’ safety depends on it. Please exhibit patience and good will when maneuvering our campus at all times. Do not drop-off or pick-up your student unless it is safe to do so. Please use caution when driving near our school and students. Please follow all posted signs and traffic regulations.

Parents are always welcome to visit our Wellness Center and Family/Parent Resource Center to get information and ask for assistance. Leave a message for our Family/Parent Center Director at (805) 524-4256 if you would like to be a volunteer or seek assistance. Any general questions, please do not hesitate to call the Main Office at (805) 524-6070.

This year’s first Coffee w/the principal is on Tuesday, September 6th at 9am in Spanish and 5pm in English—mark your calendars.

Sincerely yours,
Carlos Valdovinos
Principal

Las fotografías de identificación de estudiante se tomarán el 24 de agosto, tendremos otra fecha para los jóvenes que falten ese día, el 30 septiembre. Dear FUSD Community,

I am excited to welcome you back to the 2022-2023 school year. I hope your family had the opportunity this summer to spend quality time with loved ones and that you and your children are ready for the upcoming school year. It is going to be a great year!

The beginning of each school year is always time for reflection, preparation, and new beginnings. We will continue to focus on strengthening communication, building relationships, and working together to ensure that we have safe, welcoming, and student-focused schools.

Staff have been working all summer long to prepare for the upcoming school year and will continue to expand academic, enrichment, and social-emotional opportunities for our students, such as:

• School counselors at every school site

• Community Learning Hubs in Fillmore, Rancho Sespe, and Piru, staffed with a teacher, instructional assistant, and counselor

• Full-time bilingual community liaisons at all school sites

• Free online academic tutoring 24 hours a day/7 days a week

Each school conducts regular emergency drills and we will continue to have school resource officers at Fillmore High School and Fillmore Middle School to build relationships and respond in the event of a school emergency. COVID safety measures for the upcoming school year can be found on the FUSD website.

Please also consider supporting our School Site Councils, English Learner Advisory Committees, Parent Booster Clubs, and other schools/classroom volunteer opportunities. Connecting with these organizations along with your student’s teachers, principals, counselors, and support personnel is critical to your child’s success in school. I am looking forward to seeing our students back on our campuses on Wednesday, August 17th. I am confident that working together, we can make this school year a safe and positive experience for our students.

Proud to be a part of FUSD.

Reintroducing Cara Hazard, Fillmore Middle School 6th Grade Assistant Principal

A proud member of the Bulldog Family since the spring of 2020, Ms. Cara Hazard was immediately thrown into action as she helped navigate the difficulties of distance learning brought on by the COVID pandemic.  Ms. Hazard is thrilled to be back for her second full year of in person learning, and as this years 6th grade Assistant Principal she cannot wait to meet all the incoming students who are just beginning the next step in their educational journey.

Ms. Hazard began her career in education as a para-educator with the Saugus Union School District from 2005 until 2007. From there she went on to her first teaching job in the Palmdale School District, where she gained experience at both the elementary and middle school levels. In 2015 she would spend a year teaching middle school algebra in Albuquerque, New Mexico before returning to her teaching roots in Palmdale. All told the time she spent in Palmdale would see her twice voted as teacher of the year, and she would spend 5 years as an administrative intern. All these experiences helped lead her to the amazing opportunity of Assistant Principal at Fillmore Middle School (Go Bulldogs!).

Growing up just down the road in Santa Clarita, Ms. Hazard attended Cal State Northridge. There she earned both her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and her Master of Arts in Educational Leadership. Always striving for more knowledge, Ms. Hazard prides herself on being a lifelong learner and an avid reader. There are few things she loves more than sitting outside on a beautiful day with a good book in hand.

Ms. Hazard loves fostering an environment where students know that they are respected and cared for, believing it is paramount to educational success. She welcomes open communication with all our Bulldog families. Ms. Hazard brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to what will undoubtedly be a strong leadership team that will benefit not only Fillmore Middle School but our surrounding community.

Jan-Erik Sand Selected New Assistant Principal Fillmore Middle School

I am honored to join the Fillmore Unified School District beginning in the 2022-23 school year. As a Ventura County native, and resident of the City of Fillmore for the past 10 years now, I am thrilled at the opportunity to now serve the very community I call home.

Prior to commencing a career in education, I proudly served in the United States Marine Corps reserves from 2003-2009. In 2006 I earned the distinguished honor of Marine of the Year for 3rd ANGLICO. That same year, I completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, with an emphasis in Management, from California Lutheran University.

In February of 2007, I was called to serve in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom; an order that led to almost immediate deployment to the Middle East, where I became a combat-action veteran at the age of 23.

Upon return, I rejoined the private sector, working as a Project Manager and later, the Director of Finance & Forward Planning, for a Ventura-county based land and real estate development and engineering firm.

Selfless service, community-based stewardship, and several incredible role models, together led to the decision to pursue a career in education. By 2014 I accepted a long-term substitute teaching position focusing full-time on 7th grade mathematics. Immediately I found that serving in the classroom and empowering students to reach their highest potentials was undoubtedly the environment where I belonged.

For the 2015-16 school year, I accepted a full-time 6th grade Math & Science position at Isbell Middle School in Santa Paula. With teaching credentials in Multiple Subjects, as well as Career Technical Education (CTE) with Designated Subjects of Architecture & Engineering and Business & Finance, I have had the pleasure of teaching all four core subject areas including math, science, English language arts, and history/social studies, as well as the elective subjects including STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art & Math). Over the course of the time spent in Santa Paula, the inclusion of girls entering the Engineering Pathway at SPHS increased more than 400%. In addition to this breakthrough, the inclusivity of students in special education that truly thrived within the STEAM programs at Isbell served as further testament of how beneficial the project-based, high-quality instruction met the needs of today’s diverse students.

Inspired to follow in my father’s footsteps, and after earning several distinguished awards including: Ventura County Pathfinder’s Award, Teacher of the Year (2019), National Engineer’s Week, and Project Lead the Way National Teacher of Year (2020), I believed it was possible to expand my support for students beyond the classroom, and ultimately sought to lead a school.

In 2020 I was accepted to the School Leadership Academy with the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California (USC). The exemplary 15-month program culminated in the earning of an Administrative Credential in the Spring of 2021, allowing me to lead a TK-8 school, Thurgood Marshall, within the Oxnard School District. As the only Assistant Principal, my experiences were vast and comprehensive. The skills that I obtained throughout the 2021-22 school year have undoubtedly prepared me to now serve at Fillmore Middle School; an opportunity that once again, I am thrilled and honored to partake in.

Jan-Erik Sand
Assistant Principal
Fillmore Middle School

Jeannette Ruley Selected New Assistant Principal Fillmore Middle School

Ms. Jeannette Ruley grew up next door in Santa Paula, CA with a love for reading and writing. Ms. Ruley is known for her calm demeanor and thoughtful approach to situations. She is adept at building rapport with the school community to help students overcome hurdles and bring about high student success. Mr. Ruley strongly believes that students are more apt to behave well and focus on their academics when they know that their school is mindful of their overall needs and circumstances.

Ms. Ruley is extremely excited to work alongside the entire team at Fillmore Middle School and the surrounding community and make it a great school year for all.

Randy Garcia Selected New Assistant Principal Fillmore High

Randy Garcia, an educator for 15 years, happily returns to the Fillmore Unified School District. Mr. Garcia most recently served as an Assistant Principal in Oxnard Union High School District (OUHSD) for the past 4 years. He has previously served as a middle-school Assistant Principal, Dean of Students, a middle school teacher, and elementary teacher.

Mr. Garcia began his career in education with the Fillmore Unified School District (FUSD) as a middle school teacher and spent years teaching at both Piru and Mountain Vista Elementary Schools. He also spent a handful of years serving as an assistant coach with the FHS Varsity football and JV baseball programs. In 2012, Mr. Garcia left FUSD to seek an administrative position with the Pleasant Valley School District (PVSD). After six years in PVSD, Mr. Garcia accepted a position as an Assistant Principal with OUHSD, where he served in this role at both Pacifica High School and lastly at Hueneme High School.

Mr. Garcia is a proud resident of Fillmore and product of the Fillmore Unified School District. He is married to Mary-Allyn Garcia, also an employee of FUSD. They have four children, two that are FHS Alumni, and two daughters, who are currently attending FHS.

Carlos Valdovinos Selected New Middle School Principal

Raised in the small agricultural farming community of Santa Paula, CA, Carlos Valdovinos is the first-born son of two Mexican immigrant farm workers. From a young age, watching his parents perform backbreaking work in the fields to provide for him and his siblings instilled a grit and perseverance that has served him well over the course of his life and career. Growing up in an immigrant family of humble means developed a desire and ability to value everyone with respect and dignity no matter the circumstances. As a migrant education student and despite being born in this country, Mr. Valdovinos did not learn to speak English until the 3rd grade. His formative years and family background have shaped his desire to be an educator and gives him a special understanding of the experience of second language learners and those that come from poverty and disadvantage. At a young age he understood that academic success would be the road to realize his dreams and honor his parents’ sacrifice. Mr. V, as his students fondly refer to him, has dedicated his career to being of service to students in the pursuit of their dreams and aspirations through academic success.

After graduating high school, Mr. V went on to attend Ventura Community College, where he earned his associates of arts degree. He was then accepted to UCLA to complete his bachelor’s degree in Chicano Studies with a minor in Math Education. Mr. V. went on to earn two additional master’s degrees from UCLA. He earned his first master’s degrees and math teaching credential in 1999 and returned for his second master’s degree and administrative credential in 2002. Mr. V. started his career as a math teacher, a dean of discipline, and at the age of 32, Mr. V was one of the youngest assistant principals in LAUSD. His wide breadth of experience has helped honed his skills at being able to ascertain the pulse of a school and its community which helps him tailor his service and leadership. His favorite part of his job is working with youth because they keep him young at heart. He believes that there is nothing more important than being a positive influence on his students today because they will be the leaders of tomorrow.

Mr. V’s philosophy on education is simple: “improve our communities, one student at a time.” Mr. V attributes much of his success to a couple high school teachers and one UCLA professor who took an interest in him beyond the scope of their role. Their advice and influence have been invaluable, and he honors them with his service to every student he serves. He knows that not all students’ dreams require college, but what he is certain of, is that all students’ dreams do require: hard work, determination, patience, and above all, a solid plan. His goal with every student is to help them forge a plan for success in whatever is “next.” It is his hope to inspire the students of Fillmore by playing a positive role in their lives, just as many educators had a role in his. As he prepares to begin his tenure at FMS, he is extremely grateful and humbled to be able to come back "home" to serve the Fillmore community.
