Robotics Competition

The Flashdrives attended their 4th robotics competition, made it to the field, and drove for 12 matches with no repairs! Go Flashes! Mr. MacMahon said, "In our 4th competition ever we made it to the field and drove for all 12 matches over two days without major repairs in between. A team first. The competition was fierce and close. In the end the seniors were glad to have a second shot at competitive robotics and the newcomers are hungry for next year."

Dear FUSD Families,

I would like to thank you for your continued support and patience as we continue to adapt to state and local public health mandates. Together, we have prioritized student and staff safety while continuing to provide the best educational experiences for our students. The purpose of this letter is to provide updated information regarding the Mask Mandate for FUSD students and staff beginning March 14, 2022.

In alignment with Ventura County Public Health (VCPH) and the Executive Order issued by Governor Newsom, beginning March 14th, FUSD students and staff will no longer be required to wear masks indoors and on school busses regardless of their vaccination status. We will continue to strongly recommend indoor masking; however, students and staff will have the personal choice to wear a mask or not wear a mask. I understand that the anticipation of these changes will be a relief to some and a source of anxiety for others. We will continue to support both students and staff in making the individual decisions on whether to wear masks.

Responsibility for COVID Safety/Continuing Mitigation

  • Students and staff prescreen and stay home when sick

  • Surgical and N95 masks for students upon request in every school office

  • Continued group contact tracing and notifications

  • Frequent use of handwashing and sanitizing

  • Enhanced classroom cleaning of high-touch areas daily

  • Improved ventilation

  • Expanded testing opportunities at our elementary school sites and at the FHS stadium

  • VCPH pediatric vaccination clinics for families who wish to have their children vaccinated

FUSD will remain prepared to adjust with conditions of the virus and to all updated public health mandates

Respecting Personal Choice

  • The state is providing personal choice for masking in schools with the expectation that individual choices are respected.

  • One should not make assumptions regarding someone’s beliefs or health status based upon their choice to wear or not wear a mask, nor should they comment on them.

  • If your child expresses any anxiety, please reach out to our school counselors for support

We look forward to this next phase and are very excited to see smiling faces and to take another step towards returning to normal operations and bringing back the activities we have all missed.

El propósito de esta carta es proporcionar información actualizada sobre el Mandato de Máscara para los estudiantes y el personal de FUSD a partir del 14 de marzo de 2022.

 

En alineación con la Salud Pública del Condado de Ventura (VCPH) y la Orden Ejecutiva emitida por el Gobernador Newsom, a partir del 14 de marzo, los estudiantes y el personal de FUSD ya no estarán obligados a usar máscaras adentro ni en autobuses escolares, a pesar de su estado de vacunación.  Continuaremos recomendando que se pongan la máscara adentro; sin embargo, los estudiantes y el personal tendrán la opción personal de usar una máscara o no usar una máscara.  Entiendo que la anticipación de estos cambios será un alivio para algunos y una fuente de ansiedad para otros. Continuaremos apoyando tanto a los estudiantes como al personal en la toma de decisiones individuales sobre si usar máscaras.

Responsabilidad por la seguridad de COVID / Mitigación continua

Masks Mandate for Ventura County Students Ends after March 11

Masks Strongly Recommended but not Required

Students at public and private K-12 schools in Ventura County and throughout California will no longer be required to wear masks after March 11, regardless of their vaccination status. Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration made the announcement today, saying COVID-19 conditions have sufficiently improved to warrant the change.

The state’s decision to lift the mask mandate for students is in line with guidelines issued Friday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC says schools should only mandate masks when COVID cases and hospitalizations are high in the counties where they are located. Ventura County’s rates are in the medium category according to the CDC’s website.

Even after the mask mandate is lifted, state and local health officials strongly recommended students continue to wear them to help keep COVID-19 case numbers on their current downward trend. Anyone who would like to keep wearing a mask at school is encouraged to do so, and most schools will continue making masks available to students and staff.

Dr. César Morales, Ventura County Superintendent of Schools, was selected to provide a public education perspective to state decision-makers who develop the masking policies that local schools must follow. He relayed the concerns of those who feel that masks are uncomfortable for children and hinder learning. He also shared the worries of educators who feel uneasy about teaching in classrooms with unmasked students. He emphasized that the mask policy should be applied universally to all students, whether they are vaccinated or not, so no student feels singled out.

“This is a difficult issue with strongly held opinions on both sides, and I want to thank the many people who have reached out to me to share their views,” Dr. Morales said. “Because the state made masks optional in most public places earlier this month, I believe it’s appropriate that the same rules apply at schools. We are entering a new phase of the pandemic, and I am happy to see schools taking another step toward returning to normal.”

Schools are required to enforce the student mask mandate through March 11. Between now and then, parents and guardians can help prevent learning disruptions by having their students wear masks to school. Schools that lift the mandate before it’s allowed by the state risk significant liability issues and the potential loss of their insurance coverage.

Masks will continue to be required for school employees working with students, who are subject to rules established by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA). Cal/OSHA has not yet indicated when it will update its masking guidelines for school employees.

Throughout the pandemic, schools have been among the safest places for students to be, with most virus transmission happening off-campus. In addition to encouraging the voluntary use of masks, schools will continue using other safety measures, including improved ventilation and enhanced cleaning protocols. Parents and guardians have an important role to play as well by being vigilant about keeping students home when they are sick.
