In June 2019, Fillmore Unified launched its first-ever solar photovoltaic class through its Adult School. The class, an 11-week, 80-hour course ending August 17, has enrolled 20 students who are learning foundational electrical theory and hands-on panel installation techniques with curriculum geared to help students get nationally-recognized certification and enter the burgeoning solar industry as skilled technicians. On June 29, all students were certified as solar installation volunteers through GRID Alternatives, a key partner that donated eight solar panels to our program. In the coming weeks, students will begin earning invaluable work experience on actual solar installation jobs scheduled for Fillmore and Piru. This course is a pilot for what we hope will establish Fillmore as a solar career pathway training hub throughout Ventura County.
A message from Tom Chan, Director Special Projects and Student Services, Fillmore Unified School District:
“Fillmore Adult School is a place where people re-imagine a future of opportunities for themselves and their families. More than 40 students this year qualified to graduate, meaning they became a U.S. Citizen, earned a high school diploma, or passed the high school equivalency test. I’m beyond proud of our students! The energy, initiative, and commitment to their own learning inspires us to match that urgency and give them all we’ve got. I am beyond proud of my staff for their steadfast commitment to serve the needs of others. I am also deeply grateful for the District and Board of Trustees for their continued support - none of this would be possible without it! Congratulations to the 2019 Fillmore Adult School Graduates and their families!”

This new class, ESL/Civics in Piru at Rancho Sespe, began three weeks ago and just last night was introduced to computer technology to a packed group of 25 and growing. The children helping us as quasi-tech helpers are parents’ kids, most of whom attend Piru School, and as a one-to-one device school, are very tech savvy! They were a huge help and a resource we will tap into on an ongoing basis. Teacher Ray Barrera has done an outstanding job. He’s a 2nd grade teacher at Piru School, knows all the parents and kids, and his personal connection with the community is why It’s been so successful so far.
